[Feb 6] [Team Fortress 2] Covering Fire

Title: Covering Fire
Day/Theme: February 6 - constructive destruction gives the best kind of hard-on
Series: Team Fortress 2
Characters/Pairings: Sniper/Scout
Rating: PG-13
-----------------

The battle is going as expected for Viaduct. Too damn cold, barely any decent spots to set up, and Sniper finds himself crouching in slush while he watches the rapid-fire back and forth over the point. Steadily freezing his ass off and taking out whoever has the misfortune to dart into his sights with unerring accuracy while watching out for any stray shots that might come his way. The whole thing almost painfully routine, which is more than enough in turn to make him exceptionally paranoid.

He senses someone behind him before he hears it, that instinctive sort of edginess that gets every hair on the back of his neck standing on end. Rifle hitting the snowy ground with a muffled thud and he has a Jarate jar in hand before the thoughts even have time to process properly. The only thing stopping him from throwing immediately being the panicky shouts for mercy that he doubts even a disguised Spy would emulate. Spies tend to have more dignity.

"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! I swear to god you hit me with that…."

"I hit you with this," Sniper cuts Scout off irritably, setting the Jarate back down beside him, "and you have no one to blame but your bloody self. You don't sneak up on a man like that. Especially not one worried about getting stabbed in the back." He lets out an irritated sort of tsking noise as he turns his attention back to the battlefield. "What are you even doing up here, you're going to give me away."

"News flash. I'm pretty sure they know you're here, what with the poking new holes in their skulls. I'm just wonderin' if you can see that sentry gun they got set up from here. I swear, fuckin' thing's torn me up like six times now…." Scout shifts a bit, poking his head over the makeshift barricade and for a moment Sniper is tempted to let his counterpart on the other team ventilate the kid's brain for him. Obviously it's a lesson Scout needs to learn the hard way. Ultimately heaving a sigh as he yanks Scout back out of the line of fire, entirely unsurprised at the bullet that goes skimming past seconds later.

"And just what, are you expecting me to do about a sentry? Sabotage is Spy's job, bother him about it. And while you're at it get down there, do your own job and leave me to mine."

"Yea, yea. Whatever Spy's up to out there he's taking his sweet time at it, as usual. I just figure if you can see the damn thing you can shoot it and if you can shoot it you can take it out no problem. And if you take it out, then everybody's golden. I can get at the point and do my job, you can get back to your job, we win the day and maybe I owe you one. Y'know?" Scout grins, and for a moment Sniper wonders if he's attempting to be coy before shoving the thought aside. Scout wouldn't know coy if it shot him in the face.

"Given that it doesn't take a raving genius to figure out what your idea of 'owing me' means, and that we both know as absolute fact that even if I don't take out the sentry you're going to be lurking around come the end of the day anyway, what difference does it make?"

"Makes a difference if we lose. And it's gonna be tough to win with that sentry there."

Sniper simply gives his head a brief shake and shoulders his rifle once more, back to carefully surveying the battlefield through his scope. His voice instinctively lowering to a whisper when he speaks again, "If -- IF -- I can see it and make the shot, I'll take it." Cursing when Scout lets out a wicked little laugh and slaps him on the shoulder, jostling his sights all to hell, and he lowers his gun long enough to snap, "How's about getting back down there now? Or the only one who'll be getting shot is you."

Scout (surprisingly) says nothing, simply shooting him a lopsided grin before running back into the thick of things. One that Sniper ignores; his focus entirely on the battle and the corner the enemy's Engineer has tucked himself into.

One bullet for the Engineer, maybe four or so for the gun. Easy enough and if it keeps Scout from bothering him (at least until later that night) then it's more than worth the minimal trouble.
