[Feb 2] [Fables] Found the dark in you.
Title: Worm in the Apple
Day/Theme: Found the dark in you.
Series: Fables
Character/Pairing: Snow White (pre-GN)
Rating: PG
Comments: I’m just assuming she hates apples. I mean, I would.
She hated apples, which made the metaphor that much more annoying. She was well aware that she was no longer as unblemished as her name. She had been betrayed too often, had her heart broken deeply enough that a shadow had wormed its way in and stayed. There was a darkness there now, almost invisible under her beauty, but the right tilt of her head or play of light across her eyes would show the misery and the miserable anger.
She should’ve been able to trust her mother to be there. She should’ve been able to trust her father to remarry with some thought for her wellbeing. She should’ve been able to trust the second wife he had chosen to be her new mother. She should’ve been able to trust the strangers that took her in to keep her safe. She should’ve been able to trust at least one of the people who had come to her door. She should’ve been able to trust her husband. She should’ve been able to trust her sister.
Each one had betrayed her though. Her mother had died. Her father had married an evil maniac. Her stepmother had stopped at nothing for a chance to kill her. The dwarves, well, that didn’t bear thinking about. Her prince had come and then gone again, after whatever skirt was the closest. Her sister had gone to quite a bit of trouble to be the one closest. Trust was no longer an option.
The broken heart had eventually healed, but the mark was still on it, dark and bruised. There was nothing white about it, so she had gone to the other part of her name, covering the pain in a pretty blanket, offering no warmth or mercy to anyone. They called her frigid, and a snow queen, talked about the cold shoulders and the icy stares. She was aware of it, but saw no reason to thaw now. Not for them.
