[September 28] [Near Dark] A Thousand Miles (24/26)

Title: A Thousand Miles (24/26)
Day/Theme: September 28th/Lady Madonna
Series: Near Dark
Characters: Jesse, Mae
Rating: PG

Leaning against the wall of the roadhouse Severen had dubbed shitkicker heaven, Jesse watched as Mae danced with that scared little boy to the sound of the jukebox. She looked so clean and innocent, having wiped the blood off her chin. She seemed so gentle, as she turned to Caleb and said "He's for you."

The scared boy took off. The window shattered. And Jesse watched approvingly as Caleb dived after him, the predator on the chase at last.

Maybe Mae hadn't screwed up so badly after all.

His little girl was a wonder - and Jesse did think of her as his little girl, though he'd never quite managed to think of Homer as a son. There was something soft and deceptively delicate about Mae, made a man feel all paternal. She sure as hell didn't need much protecting, though, that girl. She might not be in-your-face tough-as-nails like his Diamondback, but that girl had her own kind of strength. Feminine. A gentle, calming influence in the midst of their wild ride.

For all that she was the youngest of their little clan - or had been, before Caleb anyway - sometimes Jesse thought Mae was the most mature of the pack. Which was part of why her choice of Caleb had frustrated him so much. Jesse never would have turned Mae himself, but she'd proved surprisingly competant and comfortable in this life. More than that; the tension that'd been growing between Jesse and Homer, that had vanished with her presence. Mae had almost become the glue that held their little gang together. Which was why he hadn't expected her, of all people, to turn someone who might destroy that. He thought she'd have known better to do a damn fool thing like that.

But maybe, just maybe, it'd work out. Because here, now, with the taste of blood on his tongue and Homer dancing on the bar as they lit up the roadhouse, as Mae's new boy ran off into the night to make his first kill - right now, life was good.
