Satoshi looked up from his soup and cast a sour look toward the noise behind him. Over the sounds of a Lakers game played across multiple television screens, a pair of men in suits and hats argued with a bespectacled member of the wait staff. The men causing a fuss over at the bar were not regulars. Satoshi had never quite seen their like here before.
If this was the sort of company that would be brought in by the improvements in the neighborhood, Satoshi wasn't sure he could express approval of the work any longer. It didn't help that he'd recently read the results of a study that suggested that bulldozing poorer urban neighborhoods like this, forcing the inhabitants to move out to other areas of the city and suburbs, didn't do much to alleviate the murky fog of crime, drugs, and general social malaise that clung to the lower classes. Of course, Satoshi thought, stirring another packet of artificial sweetener into his iced tea, he wasn't one to talk. He was no social theorist. He wasn't one of those poorer folk either. He was a privileged, middle class man.
The argument didn't seem to be dying down. Actually, by Satoshi's off-handed estimation, it was escalating. He tried not to make his curiosity too obvious, breaking up more crackers and dropping them into the remains of his poppy red soup.
It was impossible for him to tell which had happened first- had that shot been fired or had the woman screamed? All Satoshi knew was that the first shot had been followed by a second, ricocheting off something- the bar, the floor, a television, whatever- and smashing through the window, sending a rain of broken glass down over his table, into his soup, his iced tea, his hair...
The gangsters, or whatever they were, took off running.
