With a loud clatter the blue sitar flew out the Grey room and crashed into the wall. Wondering which member it was picking on Demyx today, Roxas poked his head into the room and was surprised to find Demyx was alone. "Should you be throwing around your sitar like that?" Roxas asked.
Demyx shrugged. "It's durable. It never breaks when Saix throws it so surely it won't break for me." He summoned his weapon back. "See in one piece." He strummed a note and winced. "Though maybe a little out of tune," he admitted.
While Demyx went about retuning his instrument, Roxas walked over the window and gazed out at Kingdom Hearts. It looked a little fuller today that yesterday. He flexed his fingers itching to summon his keyblade. Another day of heart collection and it would be even fuller tomorrow. He wasn't as bad as Saix, whom it was rumored could spend hours just starring at Kingdom Hearts, but all the same Roxas felt drawn to their odd moon. When he stared at it he could almost image having a heart. He was pulled out of his meditation by a sudden disharmonious sound behind him. "Sitar not cooperating?" he asked a sheepish looking Melodious Nocturne.
Demyx frowned. "No, the problem is me," he admitted. "I came up with this amazing song, sure to be hit. But then I got to thinking, all the really popular songs have lyrics, something people can sing along to you know? But no matter how hard I try I can't come up with anything."
"I'll give it a try," Roxas offered. "Don't want to deny you your first hit single."
"Thanks man." Demyx gave a quick grin and started his song. A slow mournful melody filled the room. His music spoke of emptiness and loss and something that was just out of reach. There was a longing in the melody that Roxas had never been able to feel yet understood with all his being. He struggled to think words that could describe what Demxy was playing. Roxas reached down deep inside himself, but came up empty. He was nothing but a shallow shell, a remnant of something that had long ago been lost. The song demanded powerful emotion, and any emotion was beyond him.
"Well?" Demyx asked in a tone of voice that was meant to convey eagerness, but compared to the song his pretend eagerness could easily be seen as nothing but a facade, a mask the song had burned right through.
"I can't think of anything," Roxas admitted. Demyx gave a nod small nod of understanding and turned his attention back to his instrument. Roxas quickly left the Grey Room. He didn't want to hear Demyx play the horrible song again and remind him of what he didn't have. It never occurred to Roxas that if Demyx had been able to put such feeling in his music, then maybe he wasn't as empty as they all thought. Maybe in some way Roxas was capable of creating something too.
