“I’m going to have a bad day today,” Yukino told her neighbor, former high schoolmate, and part-time baby-sitter, all rolled into one. “My eight o’clock case is with one of Soichi’s cousins,a pompous anesthesiologist who really needs to get his coming one of these days.”

“How’s that a bad thing?” Hideaki asked, genuinely puzzled as his best friend’s wife readied for work unenthusiastically. “Won’t this be opportunity then?”

“I promised Soichi I was going to be perfectly legal about it, and I promised Dad he wasn’t going to hear a whit—too many witnesses in the operating room. So I’d have to be polite for hours and be Yamato Nadeshiko with him. Ugh.”

“Uh… Yukinon, isn’t it too early for that?”

“Oh, shush. It’s just a spoonful. It’ll be buffer for all that unpleasantness. Oh, and there’s one other thing I need. . .”

“You’re seriously not going to wake my tired Soichiro to ask permission for your schemes are you?!”

“No.”

Soichiro felt the cool sticky lips of his wife settle lightly against his. He must have given himself away, then, for he felt her mouth curve into a smirk before she deepened the kiss. The spoonful she had just eaten too early in the morning was evidently strawberry ice cream.

“. . . So this is how Soichiro is defiled on a daily basis.”

Yukino ignored that remark and left for work cheerfully. "Ai and Suoh should be home earlier than usual and will need a late lunch. Thanks, Asapin!"

It took five minutes before Arima felt the nearing presence of his popular artist friend.

“I wonder if I should wipe his lips clean,” he said loudly.

“Go home, Hideaki,” muttered the blushing policeman.

“I would have looked away, if you had asked me to.”

“Shut up."
