[Jan 21][Kare Kano] An Incidental Meeting On the Train

Title: An Incidental Meeting On the Train
Day / Theme: January 21 / Two solitudes that meet, protect and greet each other
Series: Kare Kano
Character(s): Kazuma, Soichiro
Rating: G
Words: 400

A nocturnal snake of metal slithered swiftly through its worn-out paths through the city. In its bowels was a spattering of men, each ensconced in thoughts or dreams, alone. A detective was devoid of either, dozing in his seat to snatch a rare chance of rest. A band vocalist was full of both, softly humming snatches of a forming song to himself.

The lilting melody, interrupted by an experimental mix of verses, stopped abruptly, cut off by a cry of surprise as the train jerked to a rolling halt for a scheduled stop. The shadowy figure slipped through the opening doors, carrying with him the singer’s duffle bag. The detective leapt to instant wakefulness, bounding after the escaping perpetrator.

Arima Soichiro almost had the thief in a headlock when a hand to his collar pulled him back a few feet. The instinct to fight back was instantaneous, but impossibly quicker was the flash of recognition, even in the semi-darkness.

“Arima-kun,” breathed the rosy-cheeked lead of the world-famous Yin and Yang indie-band.

Soichiro glanced back to where his prey vanished and heard a faint moan from the direction.

“There’s an uncovered manhole,” Kazuma explained. “Atsuya broke his ankle because of it last week.”

“It helped get your bag back,” Soichiro said with a smile. “I’m sorry for Atsuya, though.”

They stood there grinning at each other, the flash of a passing train illuminating their faces. Soichiro called the local precinct to take care of the bag snatcher, and turned his attention back to his old friend, exchanging catch-up tales until the police officers arrived.

“Late night, huh?” Kazuma murmured.

“You, too,” Soichiro answered. “You finally have a long stretch of break, Kazuma?”

“Well, we got back from a recording session with your dad in New York this evening, but we’re leaving for a Southeast Asian tour tomorrow night.” His voice was rueful. “Tsubasa-chan is visiting her dad…”

“Aa.” The other’s smile was understanding. “Today is Yukino-san’s last night shift. She’s been on night duty the past few weeks. And the kids are going to camp tomorrow, so I wanted to see them off.”

“We’re not home nearly often enough, are we?”

“No, we’re not, Kazuma.”

“Thank you for getting my bag back for me.”

“Thank you for catching me before I fell into that manhole.”

They walked in the night in companionable silence, and then parted for their respective, beloved homes.
