Title: Cut Loose

“Sorry,” Oliver said, himself surprised. “She doesn’t want to see you.”
The shock only lasted a few seconds. What nailed him to the floor was the badly-timed epiphany that followed: it’s over. She had wandered away too far and now she won’t come skipping back or circle around to catch up, turn up beside him.
“Chiaki…”
He shook his head to signal he was fine, but it took a bit before he was in command of himself enough to move.
“The maestro--?”
“Thank you, but that won’t be necessary.”
There was any number of rationalizations he could have formed. She was overwhelmed, naturally. He was the stick against which she graduated herself. Of course, she’d be afraid to face him. He spared himself the trouble and decided to continue on with his path---she always came back eventually. What he didn’t expect was how far imbalanced he became. How his thoughts wobbled like a planet losing its grip on its moons.
Like every other person in history, his stupidity was in not knowing, not knowing that his gravity and hers had long combined to produce their eccentric orbit that traveled a greater galaxy.
Thus cut loose, he went adrift.
