[Jan. 14] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Gifted With Follies
Title: Gifted With Follies
Day/Theme: Jan. 14, 2011 "Every human folly"
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character/Pairing: Envy & Dr. Marcoh
Rating: PG
They say that in all the world there exist one hundred and eight types of human folly. But, as you might imagine, with that many things, inevitably the list can be sorted into categories. They all derive from the same selfish desires, after all: lust, wrath, sloth, greed, envy, gluttony, and pride. And among all those human follies, I was gifted with just one- one to name me, one to shape me- though I cannot say in all honesty that it has been the only human weakness I've ever expressed.
Which makes sense, if you consider what it is, right? I envy humans, both their good side and their bad (But I didn't tell you that, okay? 'Cuz if you let on to anyone that I feel that way, you are going to be in for a world of hurt, buddy). Of course, coming from where I do, it's easier to relate to their crooked side- to boil with anger, seek revenge, foster petty grievances, and bubble over with schadenfreude to see their greatest hopes fail. As I see it, the weaknesses that most humans would categorize as "bad" aren't so damning as the soft spots that they value or sanctify.
Marcoh, you should know what I'm getting at. Your biggest flaw has always been your kindness and you expose it like an open wound. It was your kindness that made you flee and your kindness that let us capture you again. It is your kindness that will kill you, sooner rather than later.
But will I relish that? Delight in it as I have in the downfall of so many other humans I have witnessed before you (and will no doubt witness after as long as humans exist)? Tell me, Dr. Marcoh. How well do you claim to know me? What do you think I'll do?
"If you do enjoy it, the pleasure will be fleeting. You'll sicken at the bitter aftertaste, Envy."
He's bold to say it and I recoil at the precision of the strike. This man- he knows. He knows too much. He sees me too well. Even for me, that weakness is there- kindness, compassion, empathy. Marcoh, among all the many, many humans I have known, you are one of those most gifted with folly. ...And because of that, I like you. At the same time, I count you among those I hate the most. The bitter aftertaste you speak of will be as fleeting as the pleasure. When you die, I won't remember you for long. There will be other humans to tempt and tease and entice me yet. There will be other jealousies. Don't overvalue yourself, Marcoh- mortal.
As much as Father, someday I might hope to be a perfect being. And that is the complete opposite of a tiny, pathetic human being.
