[Jan. 13] [Original] Going My Way?
Title: Going My Way?
Day/Theme: Jan. 13, 2011 "Wait, wait, don't tell me!"
Series: Original (Navigator)
Character/Pairing: Julian & Stuart
Rating: G
Author's comment: Roughly continued from yesterday's "Strangers" on a Train
"So," Stuart said, soft, playful, matter-of-factly. Julian was already wondering where was this headed. "Why didn't you tell me you and I were taking the same form of transportation out of New Juno?"
"I...didn't think it was relevant. We wouldn't be traveling together- at least I didn't expect that. I knew you were headed to the capital, the same as I am, but you never said what kind of business you had there, or if you were just passing through to get to the main civilian interplanetary space station," the doctor explained himself. "I didn't want to press you to discuss anything you would've preferred to keep to yourself."
It was sweet of him, Stuart thought. Julian really valued their friendship. But because he was unused to such things, he tended to err on the side of caution when it came to what he could ask of his companion. (When it came to what he could expect of Stuart, Julian seemed to stay cautious to the point of not expecting anything, which was frankly, kind of pitiable, the dear man.) "Well, it's true that the capital isn't my ultimate destination. I'm just passing through on the way back to Earth. I'm going to visit my parents in Connecticut, and then I have an appointment at the Vatican, so the theme is sort of awkward pleasure and awkward business?" He laughed. "Assuming that makes any sense to you."
Julian saw it as characteristic of Stuart. "It does." Now it seemed appropriate to share where he was going and what he planned on doing there. It wasn't anything particularly personal. There was nothing secret about it. "I'm going to the capital first to-"
"Wait, wait, don't tell me!" Stuart cut him off with a wave of his hands, "Here's another game we can play. I think I can guess where you're going and what you're doing there."
"Are you going to guess seriously, Stuart, or are you just going to tease me by making up something weird, because if you're just going to throw darts into a black hole, you might as well just let me..."
"No, I truly have a real guess or two." His brown eyes shone with sincerity, real or pretend, although Julian did not know Stuart as one who would devalue his sincerity by faking it.
"Fine, try it."
"You're going from the capital to Earth. Whatever office it is that you're connected to that got you onto Navigator- you'll go visit the headquarters. You're going to thank someone for that. For the first time, I think. And then you'll take care of some business regarding keeping your medical license up to date."
"Pretty good, Stuart. Pretty good. But it won't be the first time I thank my connection for this position- how impolite do you think I am? It'll just be the first time I mean it."
