What catches his eyes first is the bottle, with its neck sliced obliquely to widen its mouth. It is dull against the blazing white of moon-glanced snowdrifts. Next was the limp bloom that is devoured by the intensity of colors about it, its claw-like petals contorted as if in pain. Its makeshift vase is the piercing blue of her eye.

He trains his eyes on where she lounged, a subtle mockery riding the curl of his lips. He finds it unnecessary to comment on her seeming attack of domesticity.

“Your friend rescued it from the frost when he stopped for a night last week,” she says. The shadows shift as she detaches from their fronds. Skin pale as the landscape outside, hair red like rust, scars the maroon of old blood, why is she identifying with this bleached weed? “It survived the sudden drop in temperature and being stepped on, but it was going to die.”

“Hn.”

This is his usual answer. It is enough to convey that he cares little for the reasons behind her sentimental gestures, that it irritates him when her humor turns for the maudlin, that he is surprised Kurama visited her.

“His business was for my last bastions of power in the northern lands,” she assures him. “They will not relinquish allegiance without some token, as is their custom. Your friend is astute and merely knew which resources to tap.”

He glares at her. He doesn’t need assurance---assurance for what? “Mukuro, I don’t care about whoever you play house with,” he lies, “as long as the bastard doesn’t use up my stock of mirin.”

“Ah, that would be your other friend. I believe his name is Chu.”

She reflects that it is strange for a suicidal fire demon to be so attached to his cooking wine, but then it is not any stranger for a former king of the Three Kingdoms to open her house to travelers seeking beds and meals.

“That, I don’t damn get,” Hiei mutters, before stalking off.

Hmm... I don't really remember the nuances of Hiei-Mukuro banter, which is just too bad.
