When first he brought her to his half-formed home, she slid in place like landed fish returning to water, quite unlike his coming to hers. His exile in her world had spanned centuries, millennia---that was how she and hers thought of time, divided into bits and bites that can be safely carried in pockets, and how he must now think of it. With her help, he had preserved all existence as it was. But see, he was born for such deeds and the lonesome fate it came with, unlike this child, this mere human, this slight wink in eternity.
His home was half-formed the moment she agreed to be his formed half. His “world” mattered through her fallible, limited mind, and so anchored all matter in their ordered disorder. She did not know what to make of his non-human subjects, nor they of her. His people, encapsulated in flesh but liberated in spirit, did not know how to feel, now that they could.
She was to make an appearance at dawn. Her terror was in the widening whites around her earth-brown eyes, its only manifestation on her ever-serene carriage. But then, it was what she did best, living through confines of her mind, steeling her face into a mask. As such, he could not help but draw her to him, press his lips to her temple, and murmur to her ear.
“Like lightning,” he reminded.
Her eyes flashed, preternatural and queenly.
He followed her to meet the gathered throng.
