Pale and wan, he managed to smile at her through the haze of destruction brought by their unexpected battle. He had little reason to smile at her, and usually, such gestures were painted with certain mockery. Ebony did not smile back.
“Highness?” he prompted. The lack of response scared him more than at any point in the fight she just won. “Princess, are you injured.”
“No, my lord Savara,” she whispered formally, face stark and preternatural in the spreading fire. “But they are dead.”
He shook his head to indicate his lack of understanding.
“Look to the lights.”
He turned and saw the hundreds of hovering white-blue lights. He has never seen them before. Said to be the form of departing spirits after deaths so swift their outer shells, the stuff that made them intangible to the physical senses, were seared away.
Sean Savara looked to the lights and trembled.
