“Hideki?” Chii blinked as Hideki began to toss and turn on the futon. She poked him slightly. “Is Hideki all right?”

Hideki gave a startled gasp and then flailed upright, his eyes snapping open. “Chii!”

“Chii is here.” She poked him again, frowning. “Hideki is sweating. Why?”

“I…” He wiped his forehead and managed a shaky smile. “I had a nightmare, that’s all.”

Chii tilted her head to the side, considering this. “A nightmare?”

“Yeah – oh.” Hideki ran a hand through his hair and looked faintly disgusted when his fingers came back covered in perspiration. “A bad dream.”

Chii simply gazed at him, her eyes wide and interested. “…Dream?”

Hideki grimaced and Chii wondered if he was going to whimper. He did that sometimes, when she asked questions. “Uh, you know? Pictures you get in your sleep, like a film?”

“Chii does not sleep, not like Hideki does,” Chii said helpfully.

“Uh, Sumomo has a screensaver mode – like that.” Hideki nodded as if relieved.

“But that is not dreaming.” Chii bit her lip and sat back down on her heels. “Chii does not think persocoms can dream.”

Hideki looked at her thoughtfully. “Maybe not, then.” He patted her on the head. “But it’s okay now! Humans wake up really quickly once they start having a nightmare.”

“That is good,” she said seriously. “But Chii would like Hideki-dreams. Why can’t persocoms have dreams?”

Chii thought that Hideki looked sad for a moment. Then he said cheerfully, “Ask Hibiya-san! She’d probably know.”

She nodded. “Chii will do that, then.”
