She was the last to speak, and yet Tear still had not figured out what to say by the time it was her turn.

Looking at the man who stood before her now - ready to die to save the world again - was too painful, and she was forced to tear her gaze away. Her mind was a mess, and her chest hurt so much she instinctively pressed a fist against it, as if the very action would prevent her heart from shattering into a million pieces.

So many things to tell him, and not enough time for everything.

She wanted to stay. (He'd never allow it.)

She wanted to save him. (That was impossible.)

Tear settled for the only thing she would allow herself to say.

"Promise me you'll come back." It was a feeble request, so fragile it seemed the words themselves barely held together.

"Tear..."

She looked up to meet his eyes, and she didn't care how the desperation in her soul had clawed its way to her throat and into her voice. "Absolutely. No matter what." She needed him to do that much.

"I'll be waiting for you. Always. Forever." And that was the truth, even if he ended up breaking his promise - but that thought was too much to bear.

Luke smiled that soft, grown-up smile - how he'd changed since the day they first met - and he told her what she needed to hear. "All right. I promise. Without fail, I'll come back."

Lie or not, it was enough - for now, for today, for eternity - so she turned to go and walk away before her resolve broke. Tear barely managed a few steps before she was forced to stop, the strain of pulling her emotional shields up and preventing herself from crying then and there being too heavy for her mind to even command her body to move any further.

So many things to tell him, and no more time for any of it.

"Luke..."

In the end, simplicity won, yet she spoke the words so softly it would have been almost impossible for anyone but herself to hear.

"I love you."
