Love’s Not All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Key in hand, he knew that one of the bags was slipping out from under his arm just as the door opened.
“Ashiwara-san!”
“Ichikawa-san!”
“What are you…?” they both asked together.
“Akira-kun…” they both said together.
Ashiwara juggled with his bags and tried again. “I came to cook dinner for Akira-kun. He’s coming home today.”
Ichikawa pulled off her apron. “I know. That’s why I made dinner.”
“Oyako-donburi?” Ashiwara asked. “It’s Akira-kun’s favorite.”
“No. Hiyashi-chuuka.”
“But Akira-kun doesn’t like…”
“But Shindou-kun does,” Ichikawa said.
“...oh…?”
Ichikawa nodded sadly as Ashiwara’s bag fell, the sound of eggs breaking loudest of all.
Author’s notes:
Written as a nod to the scene in Wong Kar-wai’s movie, Chungking Express, when Faye Wong’s character meets the character played by Tony Leung, as she’s leaving his apartment and he arrives unexpectantly. Priceless.
Ashiwara 4-dan is one of Touya Kouyo's students. It was revealed in the manga that he would come to Touya's home and cook for Akira when Touya's parents were out of town. Really good friend or...?
Ichikawa is the "receptionist" at the Go salon. She has also been known to ply Touya Akira with food... This story might be considered a sequel to Arrivals and Departures.
