[September 26] [Near Dark] A Thousand Miles (22/26)
Title: A Thousand Miles (22/26)
Day/Theme: September 26th/Loneliness and desire
Series: Near Dark
Pairing: Mae/Caleb
Rating: PG
Mae had no reason to be lonely. Jesse was as good to her as her real - her original... her old father had ever been. Homer was the sweetest little brother, a constant companion when she needed one but willing to give her space when she wanted it. Diamondback, well, she'd never quite treated Mae like a daughter, but Mae couldn't help but look up to the woman. And Severen, that wild energy of his was infectious; he took a little getting used to, but she thought it might be impossible not to get along with him eventually, provided he didn't kill you.
With all these people around her, she had no reason to be lonely at all. None whatsoever.
But a girl likes to get to know folks outside her own family. Likes to go out, make some friends... fall in love, even. And meeting new folks isn't easy when you're constantly on the move, and also eating people. The only guys she could ever be honest with outside the family were the ones she was going to kill. It wasn't bad, exactly; it just got hard, is all. Every once in a while, when she talked to a guy long enough, she'd realize she kind of wanted them to live.
She hadn't really meant to bite Caleb. Well, yes, she had - the whole plan had been to get a ride home and then eat him - but, well, right then, sitting beside him, talking with him, she hadn't wanted to kill him. The bite, it had just kinda happened. An accident. A screw-up, okay, maybe.
But as she snuggled closer to Caleb in the back of the Winnebago, she was glad she'd screwed up.
