chinami. I...do not really know what this is.
"That's a sorrowful little existence you have there, Envy," Pride smirked. Pride- always so smug and supposedly superior. Like he thought he was the favorite child. So what if he was the oldest? At heart he was just a big baby anyway.
"What do you want, you stuck-up shadow? Does this observation of yours serve some purpose, or is it just another chance for you to mouth off? You don't want to break my heart and send me running away."
"What? Like Greed did? Ha," the diminutive homunculi laughed, "You wouldn't do that, Envy. You wouldn't leave us. You need us- far too much to run away. You're not going to find any satisfaction living among humans or chimera." Pride's paced around in his little container like he was strutting down a cat-walk.
Envy pouted. How despicable. Even if Pride was the favorite, everyone knew he was the cute one. Anyway, didn't his "sibling" have anything better to do than get under his skin? "Why don't you go back to your school lessons, Pride? You've got to be getting smart enough to break out of kindergarten one of these days?"
"Oh, ouch." So Pride was picking up on the idea of sarcasm these days, was he? Envy rolled his eyes. He got up and stretched. It was about time that he got out of here. He didn't have to wait for Pride to leave if he just took off first.
"I may play at being a human," Pride went on, "But at least I don't really want to lower myself to their level. I'm not jealous of lesser beings. I happen to like myself exactly as I am."
"Ah, that's it! Go curl up in a hole and die. I'm so out of here." Envy got up and marched off, fists curled at his sides.
"You seem troubled," Dr. Marcoh said to his captor. Marcoh fascinated Envy. He was endlessly varied in his behavior- predictable as that behavior was. He was frightened easily and goaded into actions, but occasionally he would exhibit exceptional strength of will and calm in the face of despair. Also, no matter what Envy did to him and no matter how he was threatened, deep down, even with his captors, he remained...kind.
"Troubled? Huh, what makes you think that? I don't have troubles."
The doctor shook his head. "Everyone has troubles of one sort or another."
"I'm not human, old man. You wouldn't understand the kind of 'troubles' that I had, even if I had 'em." It would've been easy enough just to walk away, but for some reason- that strange interest that Marcoh provoked in him, he supposed- Envy stayed. He wanted to hear what else the doctor had to say. He wanted to prove him wrong if need be. ...And if he was correct, well, he wasn't going to confirm any of his pet theories, but it would be good to know what he knew, right?
"Well," Marcoh's dark eyes shifted up from his folded hands to Envy's still and neutral face, "I suppose I'm no expert and I can't say for sure, but I imagine I can relate to you on some level. You homunculi were originally created by humans, weren't you? Just because you're different in many ways doesn't mean there's an unbridgeable chasm between us. There are many variations between humans, but we are still able to come to understand one another. Why shouldn't it be the same for you and I?"
Envy was impressed by how long the doctor could manage to look into his eyes. He was getting sort of bold today. "I'll say it again. I'm not human. I am superior to you measly humans in every way. You can't understand what it's like to be me."
"So, if empathizing with a homunculi is beyond my reach...does that mean being human is also beyond yours?" Marcoh looked very serious. "Because you're not quite the same as the others. You don't strike me as so different from we humans after all."
"Don't ever say that," Envy snarled. He frowned. Reacting like that showed that their prisoner had managed to strike a chord, but he couldn't help himself. It was irritating. He was supposed to be playing Marcoh, not the other way around.
"As you say." Marcoh fell quiet and pressed no further.
Envy watched him for a while anyway, wondering what was in his mind. He couldn't understand humans. And if he couldn't understand them, how could he ever be more like them? ...He couldn't.
Hmph. He wouldn't want to be like them anyway.
