[September the Twenty-Fifth] [Original] Debts
Title: Debts
Day/Theme: What we had I cannot even say
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Gale
Rating: PG
Summary: What they had is eclipsed by what they have. Vignette, of a sort.
These days it's difficult for Palomir to imagine living without Gale. It is not that he holds her particularly dear or close to heart, but rather that she has insinuated herself into the cracks of his lift so well that she has become as immovable and constant as the sun and the tides. That is, Palomir might express feeling something to the effect -- "She's always there." -- were he asked, but there are not many who presume (or desire) to examine the workings of his head.
It is a sentiment that goes unsaid, and though he knows that separation is inevitable, he cannot help but to come to anticipate her presence around every corner.
In truth, Palomir is at a loss to describe the delicate, interlocking latticework of favors, friendship, and the occasional reckless loyalty that tie him to this otherwise insignificant (and distressingly pet-like) creature. He knows it exists, and he knows that is what makes all the difference between this girl and just another stranger on the streets.
And that is the extent of his knowledge.
The elf has not lived for three-hundred odd years without attaining some knowledge of the unspoken codes of debt and gratitude. Vaguely, he dreads the size of the interest his account with the girl will have achieved by the time she calls in her due.
Funnily enough, Gale does not strike Palomir as one to stiff her aid no matter if it is eventually repaid or not, and in that, he takes comfort and a bizarre kind of pride. He is not a bad judge of character, as rare a character as Gale may be, and his intuition is sharper than most give him credit for.
Even so, he wonders how many lemon sherbets it is going to take to convince Gale to forgive him for this particular incident.
A/N: A nod to current events RPwise. (He's been voluntarily kidnapped.)
