[20 SEP] [NURARIHYON NO MAGO] [DEMON'S MOON]
Title: Demon's Moon
Day/Theme: 20th September 2010; almost gold, almost amber, almost light
Series: Nurarihyon no Mago
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Rikuo, Tsurara; implied Rikuo/Tsurara
Rating: G
Notes: Mild, mild spoilers for the series up to the Kyoto arc.
She has always been there; he knows this much. There are pictures to prove it: in them, he is a baby happily surrounded by demons that would scare a grown man to tears. Among them is a small girl dressed in a pure white kimono who is in almost every shot. In the pictures he grows rapidly, but she with her ice blue hair and luminescent yellow eyes changes little - all youkai aged slowly, after all - yet her presence is felt all the same, both in those snapshots and in his own memories... although they were mostly guilty ones; he'd been a notorious prankster like his famous grandfather.
(He recalls faintly how even then he had been entranced by that shade of yellow.)
Things are a little different now - he is older, awakened and most of all more responsible - but some things are the same. She is still here by his side, doing her best to protect him from everything (his own foolishness included). But perhaps he is wrong; if anything, his quest for the clan leadership has tightened the bonds even more. It is... official now, for lack of a better term, finalized with the exchange of a drink under the light of the full moon. She will follow him wherever he goes, just as she has always done in the past. By far she is not the strongest fighter at his back, but he is all too aware that her devotion to him is probably second to none. During that terrible battle with Tamazuki, she had been the one to reach him, to save his life and defend his back at the most dire moment.
(I'll protect you for all eternity. The words ring in his soul, an echo of a promise he remembers was first whispered to him a lifetime ago.)
The feel of her small back resting against his during that battle is a lingering memory; as strong as she is, his snow maiden is still fragile. That truth had never been clearer during the fight with Tsuchigumo; the pain from his wounds had dulled at the sensation of her lifeless form falling into his arms. It is not a memory he likes to recall: that overwhelming despair, that consuming rage... then that utter helplessness at seeing her taken away so effortlessly. It had pushed him in his training, where he had to put his life on the line and had been rewarded with the strength to gain her back. She'd screamed at him then, asking him why he'd come. He could only tell her that he'd come to save her.
(I'll always save you. They are words he cannot yet speak but thrum in his heart all the same.)
