[Sept. 18] [Tales of the Abyss] The New Advances, the Old Recedes
Title: The New Advances, the Old Recedes
Day/Theme: Sept. 18, 2010 "portrait of a family"
Series: Tales of the Abyss
Character/Pairing: Natalia (Natalia/Asch), Ingobert, etc.
Rating: PG
There is a father, a king; there is a daughter, a princess. The father has a sister with a husband, and one son where there were once two. Or is it two where there was once one? For those completely outside of the loop of the personal business of the Kimlascan royal family it's difficult to tell. For those privy to these matters, it is still more confusing than one might expect.
Still, there are more mysteries concerning the royals than just the state and status of affianced cousins. This is the state of the family now, but before there were others. There was a mother, a queen. But there was also a nurse, a grandmother, and a father and mother, a real father and mother to the daughter who became a princess, just as there was a daughter destined by blood for the throne who would never ascend it.
The father is aging fast, worn down by the pressure of war after war, chaos after chaos, and disaster after disaster. The land has been won and lost, destroyed and saved, abandoned and redeemed once and then again, or even many times, all in the span of his reign.
The daughter is maturing just as fast, and for the best. This is what Kimlasca-Lanvaldear needs. New strength, new hope, new blood. The old engagement has been quietly broken. Luke is not Asch, and Natalia knows this. She would not encourage him to act any other way. There will be a new engagement made, sooner or later. A political one, like the one that came before. Whether or not there will be love, no one can say. Whether or not the princess cares, that too remains unclear.
Love for a man is fragile. She has learned that. She loves her father, but once, all for the sake of blood and secrets, he nearly rejected her. She loved Asch, but he has died. Love for a country is stronger. Love for a people is best. One day, soon, Natalia will find and wed a man, taking him for a consort. One day, later, Natalia will bear heirs, to further the line and honor of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear. What love there will be in these endeavors remains to be seen. What love she has for her country is already present now, blooming, bursting, straining to fill every crack in her heart. The presence of the tendrils of hope will shore up the sagging wall. Memory is a better family than blood. Love is the strongest family of all.
