[Sept. 11] [Ace Attorney series] Will You Save the World Too?
Title: Will You Save the World Too?
Day/Theme: Sept. 11, 2010 "a desire to save the world from chaos"
Series: Ace Attorney series
Character/Pairing: Pearl & Maya (some Maya->Phoenix)
Rating: G
From a very young age, Pearl had been surrounded by lawlessness and chaos. But, as Mystic Maya was always telling her, she had been a brave little girl, and helpful too. "Pearly, you were practically just a baby then and you were able to do so much! I was always so proud of you. You were barely scared at all. Actually," she admitted, "I think you were more helpful a lot of the time than me."
"No, Mystic Maya," Pearl insisted, "I was only brave because I was too little and naive to know any better!" All things considered, Pearl Fey was still relatively little and naive, being only thirteen years old and firmly ensconced in the traditional culture of Kurain, but she was sharp for her age (she always had been) and rather mature. The difficulties surrounding her immediate family, especially her mother's imprisonment, had served to hasten her growth to maturity. "If I had really realized how bad things were, I might've been paralyzed with indecision."
"Well, you weren't. You should be proud. When I talked to Nick on the phone the other day, he asked about you. I told him how well you're doing in your studies. I mean, your grades are good and your spiritual powers are so impressive, I wouldn't be too surprised if you became my successor one day."
"M-Mystic Maya, what about when you have a daughter? Won't your daughter have to be your successor? ...Unless she doesn't have the aptitude, I guess." Talk of a future where Maya wasn't the master of Kurain upset Pearl. She had lost too many people already. Any future without Maya in it had to be very far away. She wouldn't accept it any other way.
"Well, if I have a daughter who wants to be my successor, she could be. But I don't want her to feel bound by tradition." Pearl loved the way Mystic Maya's face lit up when she spoke of her ideals this way. She was always so optimistic. "If she wants to take after Mia and go out to do some good in the world, that would make me happy too. Pearly, if it would make you happy to go back to the city and help Nick instead of staying here, you know I would let you, right? You're like a little sister to me. I want you to be happy too."
"I...I want to help make the world a more just place too, Mystic Maya," Pearl admitted shyly, "But...I couldn't go back to stay with Mr. Nick without you. You and Mr. Nick...you're a team. I can't be part of that without you."
"Oh, Pearly, you're so sweet." Maya sighed. The days she had spent at Nick's side would always hold a special place in her heart, but since her official ascension to the position of matriarch and mistress of Kurain, she could no longer indulgence in such a breezy, carefree life. "You shouldn't let me hold you back though. Some things just aren't meant to be."
"We might spend most of our time here in Kurain, but that doesn't mean we can't do our part. Maybe someday we'll go to court again. Maybe someday our skills will save an innocent person again." Pearl started to feel a flower of hope blooming within her. If Mr. Nick and Mystic Maya met again in person, she was certain Maya's feelings about staying cooped up in the village would change. Together, she still thought, if not the whole world, Maya and Mr. Nick could save at least Los Angeles from chaos.
