Author's comment: [livejournal.com profile] chinami suggested Chloe. I think this story is somewhat influenced by [livejournal.com profile] inkpool's fic "Our Utopia."

The longer Chloe held her title as a knight, the more she saw the difficulties of being one. As a knight she had duties to Gadoria's government, to the people, her tenants, living on the Valens estate, and to dispensing justice in general, including (her favorite obligation) protecting those weaker than her. The political parts of the job often stumped her. She was laughed at behind her back by the haughtier members of the court. She didn't just imagine it. She knew it for a fact since Jay had told her so during a recent sojourn in Gadoria. He offered to make his "services" available to her (for a bargain price even), but Chloe had flat out refused him. He had acted disappointed at being able to come to her aid, but secretly Chloe thought he was glad that she would not ask him to dirty her hands for her sake.

The information he brought her was good enough. Jay was quietly learning all the proper protocol of Gadoria's court and society circles and returning to Chloe's side to pass on what he had gathered to her.

The servants laughed good-naturedly to see the mistress of House Valens humbled before the effeminate young man who taught her. Jay would pace around the room while Chloe sat at her desk like a schoolgirl. He quizzed her on the land laws, proper forms of address, and the minutia of past judicial cases he imagined might prove relevant to her goals in serving the people. He sounded harsh and mocking, but when he was away, tending to other tasks and contacts or soaking up more material with which to tutor his knightly comrade, Chloe would assure Bess and the others who thought him too harsh, "That's just Jay's way. He doesn't mean any harm." She smiled and wondered why her face was turning red. Jay was only a friend. She didn't feel anything more for him than she did for Shirley or Will or any of the others, right? Anyway, he had Moses.

Jay often used the bandit for an excuse for his love of observing and practicing the rituals of the court. "After all that uncouth company, how can I resist spending time with men and women who can form a coherent sentence?" he would laugh lightly. His nature made it difficult for Chloe to express the full depth of her gratitude to him. He handled life by putting up a rock hard protective front. He had been hurt so many times before. Deep down there was still a warmth and gentleness in him. On the Legacy, Chloe had been among those gifted with a glimpse of this vulnerable side. To a certain degree, she was the same, hiding a tender underbelly beneath her armored shell. She didn't hide it as well as Jay though. Was it a good thing or was it bad?

At court she exercised the perfect manners he had taught her. In the back of her mind as she bowed and petitioned, she thought of him. Sometimes she thought Jay's tutoring was all that stood between her and the abyss of public disgrace. But here she was, well-regarded. With Jay to support her behind the scenes, she found, oddly, that her star was rising. Jay didn't find it strange at all.
