He used to think it was the curse of the Time Lords.

That’s what he told Rose, all those years ago. You can spend the rest of your life with me. But I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on, alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords. He would blame it on that, all those things that ate away at him- Rose sobbing on the beach, the look in Martha’s eyes, Donna pleading with him to let her stay- it’s because of who he is. Because of the two hearts beating in his chest, because of his home, because of the blue ship beneath his feet- these are the things that cause him to tear people apart.

He looks at her, now, this ginger girl in front of him, broken without even knowing it. He can see the way she tries to convince him that she is alright, and it breaks his heart to see her so sad without even knowing the reason why. Occasionally he will reach into his pocket and feel the soft velvet of the box he keeps, the promise of forever swallowed by a crack in time.

He will think back to Rory Williams, because he is destined to be the one to keep him alive, even after he was never born. He will think of the look in his eyes when he died, again, and even though he had seen it happen once already it did not hurt any less. And Amy will sob and claw at him but then she will smile and forget and he is not sure which is more painful.

And he will understand- it is not the hearts in his chest that wreak the pain and the havoc that so often follows him. It is him- it is the man he is, not the Time Lord he will always be.
