[September 25] [Near Dark] A Thousand Miles (21/26)
Title: A Thousand Miles (21/26)
Day/Theme: September 25th/What we had I cannot even say
Series: Near Dark
Characters, Pairing: Homer/Mae
Rating: PG
Homer had always known he would lose her, eventually. He hadn't liked to think about it, hadn't liked to admit it to himself, but he'd known. He'd tried to do the same thing to Mae that Diamondback had done to him, hadn't he? She'd frozen him in time, bound him to her, the eternal son. He had no choice but to stay with her, not when it came down to it.
He'd turned Mae, and so she'd been bound to him, for a while. He'd been her guide. He'd shown her how to hunt, how to survive. She'd needed him.
But in the end, she was stronger than he was.
Homer was bound to Diamondback, to Jesse. For a while he'd hoped he could have cut those ties, replace them with Mae. He and Mae could go off on their own, just the two of them, and she'd be the pack he needed - but unlike his current pack, she wouldn't see him as a child. She'd see him as a mentor, a companion. It would be perfect.
But there was only so much he had to teach her. And after she'd learned that... well, she didn't really need him at all, did she? She could hunt on her own. She smiled at Jesse as warmly as she ever had at Homer. And the way she looked at those boys she hunted... the hunger in them wasn't just for their blood. Never had she looked at Homer like that, not once.
He shouldn't have expected her to, he knew that. After all, there was no reason for her to spend eternity with someone who, ultimately, even she saw as a child.
