I Wish You Were Mine

~!~

As the celebration died down and the drunk fell asleep, Nami found herself one of the few still awake. Their new nakama, Brook the musical skeleton, was still playing the piano, but it was soft, quiet, lullaby-like. The rambunctious atmosphere had died after the third or fourth playing of Binks' Sake, and Brook had slowly modulated into a softer, less playful tune and key.

Nami was one of the few still awake who could appreciate it. Now she knew why Luffy had insisted on a musician. It just seemed to round everything out. What else could they need on the crew now? Would Brook be their last crew member?

Not likely, she mused, glancing over to where she had last spotted Luffy.

She frowned when she saw the expression on her usually over-excited captain's face. Luffy was sitting at a bench, slouching forward with his elbows on the table in front of him, his lips pouting out and his eyes glazed over as if lost in thought. It was such an odd position to see him in. He was supposed to be ever-happy, and he should have been asleep after all the food he had eaten and all the partying he had done.

With a sigh, Nami took hold of her drink and stood up. She stepped over to his table and sat down beside him, watching his eyes shift over to her for just a moment before they moved back to the closed off area where the injured first mate was still being tended by the doctor.

Ah.

She smiled sadly and placed her arm on the table next to his, her fingers holding his elbow. "It's not like you to worry, Luffy."

Luffy lifted his head to face her, his eyes seemingly searching her face. She did her best to the hide the tears she could feel coming unbidden into her eyes. After so long of being with him, being around him, she had discovered that her heart had led her here. But he loved someone else. Someone she couldn't compete with. Someone he had picked up before her.

"M'not worried," he mumbled, looking away from her.

She had to wonder if he knew what she thought, knew what she felt. Luffy did seem to be able to read character really well, and at strange moments, he seemed to know more about a person than anyone should have a right to.

"Then go to sleep and get some rest."

Nami watched as he shook his head, but it was lazy and slow. He was exhausted. He would never admit it, she was sure, but she could tell that he needed rest. Even Luffy had down-moments from coming off a high of insane celebration.

"M'not tired," he mumbled, though his eyes were only half open.

She had to resist the slight urge to smack him for being such an idiot. Of course he was tired. Anyone could see that. Sure, he had hopped up with a ridiculous amount of energy after such a rough battle. Sure, he had seemed to have had his exhaustion drained from him while the rest of them were still struggling to do something as simple as walk. But he had celebrated throughout the night, using up all that energy, and he had something else bothering him, keeping him from so much as resting after a heavy party.

Nami forced a smile, squeezed his arm. "He'll be okay," she whispered.

It was so hard to comfort for something like this. So hard. To say something so simple. Even though a part of her own heart was worried about Zoro. Even though her strong nakama bond kept her from hating the one who had stolen the love of her life.

Luffy turned to her, opened his mouth, ready to say something in return, his eyes so beautiful even drooped down in sadness. But Chopper's high pitch grabbed Luffy's attention, "Zoro's awake!"

In an instant, Luffy was gone. He reached out and stretched, sling-shotting himself over to Zoro's side in the span of a few seconds, making empty plates and cups fall and shatter to the floor. Nami was left to stare after him. Left to watch as Luffy laid his head next to Zoro's injured body. Left to fight tears as Luffy's giant grin split his face at the sight of Zoro's eyes opening.

She watched them for a few moments. Knowing by the looks they gave each other that she would be stepping between something beautiful.

Nami covered her mouth with her hand and let the tears fall, let her wish disappear for the sake of his happiness. She paused momentarily when she felt a hand on her shoulder, blinked her eyes to spot a familiar string of smoke in the air around her. She sniffed as Sanji moved to sit beside her. She tried to stay strong as he wrapped his arms around her. But the tears came again, and she found herself crying into the black suit jacket, found herself crying on the shoulder of her nakama.

And Sanji said nothing. Just let her cry. For a wish that would never come true. For a dream that would have to settle for second-best. For a love that would never be satisfied.

A/N: *cry* I don't know what's come over me, but that feeling was all too easy to write.
