Himawari's first memory is of the fire. For weeks afterward, fires bloom at the edges of her dreams; she wakes up choking on tears, snot, smoke. Cocooned in blankets, she shakes and shakes.
Mother's hands rub soothing circles on her back. Her voice is husky from sleep as she says mechanically, over and over, You're not a monster. You're not a monster.
She is four years old. This is the moment when she stops believing the stories that her parents tell her.
Years later, Watanuki-kun confesses, hesitantly, Monsters are kinda attracted to me, and she wishes that she didn't understand.
