When Sango buried Kohaku, her hands were bleeding. Kagome begged her to stop and bandage the cuts- they were sure to get infected. Sango paid no heed. She had wanted to feel the pain. Her hands throbbed as dirt entered the wounds, but she barely noticed. The only cuts she bandaged were Kohaku's. Carefully she wrapped bandages around the wound on his back. Using blood-stained wraps cloth she covered the marks her sword had made, the place she'd dug out his jewel shard. It was sibling to the scar on her own back that he'd caused.
Sango parted company with Inuyasha, Kagome and Shippo soon after. Kagome and Inuyasha had gotten in their umpteenth argument about Kikyo and Kagome had stormed off and gone home. Sango decided then that she could wait on them no longer. She had intended to leave the village by the well without so much as a goodbye, but Miroku caught her sneaking away. He understood. His wind tunnel was growing at a faster rate and he too had no time left to waste. He vowed to stay with her always. Together they would hunt for the monster that had ruined both their lives.
Miroku had no proper grave. Every part of him disappeared into the wind tunnel. All that remained was a crater. Sango ate fine food that night and toasted his memory as she drank. She drank more than she'd ever had before in her life. She even grabbed the serving girl's butt in some sort of drunken half-assed attempt to keep his spirit alive. But the mourning that dawned found her alone, hung-over and the most miserable she’d ever felt: another heart-breaking sorrow, another loved one dead at his hand. She grabbed Hirakotsu, climbed unsteadily to her feet and resumed her pursuit.
With only Kilala by her side she searched for a trace of Naraku, till she was too far along. He looked so much like his father she decided the first and last time she held the baby. She left him at a temple in the care of some monks. They begged her to stay and raise the child herself. But she knew she was no longer capable of nurturing life, only of ending it.
And so Sango wanders, always going after Naraku. She knows, realistically, she is probably not strong enough to stop him by herself, but she will still try with everything she has, and one way or another it will end with him. If she kills him, then she will finally have her revenge, she will finally be able to rest peacefully. If he kills her, then she will be with her loved ones again. With Kilala on her shoulder and Hirakotsu on her back, Sango walks on until the end.
