They kept finding each other in the unlikeliest of places. There was an underground university that held all the records of a long-lost civilization; a library built by bird people on the maze-like branches of giant trees; a sentient spaceship created to carry explorers to the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

No matter where they went, there was always trouble, too.

"Tell me, Doctor," River said once, when they'd just managed to outrun a very angry soldier. "Don't you ever want to visit normal places?"

He pretended to think about it, only for a moment. And then he grinned.

"Not really."

"Glad we're on the same page," she replied, and dropped a smoke bomb behind them just in time to start running again.
