He always said that he traveled because he wanted to. Pure and simple. Romana sometimes claimed that he only went on like this because he'd been doing it for so long that he wouldn't know what to do with himself if he stopped, but she was wrong, of course.

In any case, she was still around. And if you're not an impartial observer, he told her, when he was feeling particularly annoying, you really shouldn't be hypothesizing.

That didn't really make her change her mind, but at least it got her rambling about how the Doctor was the last person in the universe with any right to complain about misuse of the scientific method. Which meant she'd stop trying to meddle into his business, at least for a little while.

And if she wasn't constantly talking about it, well, then it was easier to stop wondering if she might have had a point after all.
