[September 25] [Castlevania - Symphony of the Night ] [What we had I cannot even say]
September 25 / Castlevania - Symphony of the Night / "Silence of the Heart"
Title: Silence of the Heart
Day/Theme: September 25/ What we had I cannot even say
Series: Castlevania - Symphony of the Night
Character/Pairing: Alucard Adrian Tepes x Maria Renard
Rating: R
Perhaps one of the things I will never forget about this man, this...dhampire...is that he will never be a steady presence in my heart.
Always shifting...transforming from dark to light...moving from fire to ice and never standing still.
He intrigues me in many ways, yes. My heart may beat for him but I will never be sure if his heart will stop even for mine.
~from the diary of Maria Renard
Dawn.
The sun was peering slowly from behind the mountains of Transylvannia and already, the villagers of Warakiya were rousing slowly to start a new day.
Maria stifled a yawn as she listened to the sounds of the servants downstairs chattering excitedly amidst the din of pots and pans.
How was it that people could easily forget the evil that Count Dracula had wrought on them? Eight years had passed and the terror of battling with the demon inhabitants of Castlevania were still fresh in her mind, yet those who had suffered more and had called for her protection seemed to have moved on, the ruins of that haunted castle a distant and foggy memory.
There are few who will choose to remember, Maria. Others will always choose to forget.
The words of her brother-in-law and famed vampire hunter, Richter Belmont rang in her ears as the church bells tolled.
"How true," she murmured, setting the quill pen and inkwell aside as she stood up to clear her desk. "Everyone else will always choose to forget..."
"And have you chosen to forget as well, Maria?"
The new voice caused shock to run down her spine and the first thought that came to her mind was to defend herself. Quickly Maria grabbed the whip hanging on her chair and spun around, ready to dispose of the intruder.
A larger gloved hand caught her by the wrist and before she could react, she was imprisoned against the wall and her whip had fallen to the floor.
"Tell me that you have not forgotten, Maria..." the voice urged, filled with a longing that surprised her.
She lifted her head, only to find herself slowly drowning in an intense, amber gaze that she knew all too well. "Do not test me, Adrian," she warned, her voice low. "I may be human but you are just a man and you will not win..."
The mouth that descended on hers told her she was wrong. He always kissed her in such a way that no matter how hard she tried, she would NEVER forget what it felt like.
Alucard Adrian Tepes Dracula. The vampire prince. Sole heir to Count Vlad Tepes Dracula's throne. He was forever shrouded in mystery, forever meant to be that solemn figure fading in the distance.
There was very little that Maria knew about him. All she knew was that he was only half-vampire and that his mother had been burned at the stake, condemned for witchcraft by the local villagers. Yet he stirred her blood, made her feel things that she thought she would never be capable of feeling.
This was her last thought as Adrian lifted her and carried her to bed, his mouth still fixed on her as the morning sun's rays pierced through her window.

Adrian lay in bed, holding her close to him as he stared at the ceiling. "Answer me, Maria..." he pleaded, his voice soft and urgent. "Have you chosen to forget?"
She lifted her head, blonde curls spilling over her shoulders and around her face. "Nay, Adrian," she replied. "I have not."
The air hung thick with their silence and Adrian found, for the first time in his life, that he was at a loss for what to say.
"Maria..." he began, but was silenced by her fingers on his lips.
Her green eyes were misty with the tears she would not shed. "I have not forgotten, Adrian. But neither do I choose to have you in my life. What we had...what we shared...I cannot even say..."
"I am sorry, Maria."
The woman shook her head. "Twas my choice to make, Adrian. Not yours and never yours..."
In that moment, he understood. And slowly, he extricated herself from his arms and said his final goodbyes.
