[Aug 13] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Somewhere To Go
Title: Somewhere To Go
Day/Theme: August 13 - life is short and the world is wide
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters/Pairing: Al, Winry, Al/Mei
Rating: G
Words: 298
Notes: SPOILERS for the end of the manga
"Are you ever going to settle down?" Winry asked them one afternoon, a few days before they left again.
Most times, Al's immediate reaction to that question was to tense and make an effort not to run away. Of course, most times, it came from Mei's family and felt like an accusation. (He had never needed to answer, however. Mei took care of all the ranting about it on her own.) With Winry, on the other hand, it was different. It was genuine curiosity; nothing else. So he just laughed a bit and served himself another slice of apple pie.
"We're married," he said. "Isn't that 'settled down' enough?"
"I mean literally. And you know that," she answered. She had to move the baby from one of her arms to the other, but still managed to give Al a playful slap over the head. "Haven't you ever wanted a house? A place of your own? Even Ed likes having somewhere to come back, you know. It doesn't mean you're not welcome here!" she added quickly, as if it was necessary at all. "But… it feels different, making your own home."
"I suppose so," Al had to admit. Their life wasn't exactly average, after all. Then again, when had it? "But there's always time for that."
"You might have children someday," Winry told him, teasing. She always said that Al would make a great dad. Then again, she also claimed that he'd be better than Ed, so Al could never be sure of how much she meant it and how much was just a way to get his brother to flail.
"Well, we'll decide what to do when the time comes, then," he replied. And then he just grinned. "We don't need one place. We've got the whole world."
