There was so much to do that a lifetime wouldn't be enough. This was clear.

However, Mei didn't mind. They had known since the planning stages that this would be the case. What they were doing was nothing more than the beginning, and then those who came after them would have some solid ground to stand on. Chances were that they wouldn't see the results of their work, but someone had to start.

It was a lot of responsibility, yes. But both Mei and Al were used to dealing with much, much worse since they were very young. Besides, this wasn't nearly as dangerous as anything they had done before. They were good at it, too.

Of course, it was very difficult. They had to travel almost without rest, sometimes through places that hadn't been explored in a long time and didn't even have proper roads. They spent far too many hours in cold, dark libraries reading dusty scrolls that threatened to crumble in their hands before they were able to read them. They argued constantly over meanings and interpretations and the best ways to combine techniques.

And sometimes, on the really bad days, they remembered why they were doing this in the first place. In that kind of research, after all, you never knew what you were going to find. There were things that should never have happened - things that even reading about was enough to make one feel ill.

(And still, nothing compared to what they had already seen, nothing ever would.)

Even with all of those troubles, though, Mei never regretted her choice. They were doing the right thing. And they were doing it together.

She wouldn't have changed it for the world.
