The first week was the hardest.
Our leaving weighed heavily on Raphael. Though I had spent the whole of my years within Rouen's walls, the city held nothing dear to me. My parents were buried in its soil, but plague had taken them years ago. I did not mourn our separation.
But Raphael did not take this path willingly; his family had forced it upon him. He, who had brought the Sorel household into the highest echelons of French aristocracy, now endured the humiliation of the exile.
He never spoke of it, but his anger was not easily hidden. When he looked to Rouen, his eyes held no longing or regret - only rage.
Naive as I was, I believed his exile temporary.
“Don't be sad,” I said. “Someday, you'll come home.”
Raphael turned to me, his smile dark. It might have frightened another, but Raphael's pleasure was all that mattered to me; I devoured each morsel of approval like a starving dog.
“You are right, Amy. We shall return, and claim our rightful place amongst this...rabble. Until then, let us make the most of this voyage.”
We turned our backs on Rouen. Raphael never looked back.
