[Aug 6] [Transformers G1] First Step

Title: First Step
Day/Theme: August 6 - that we should voyage far
Series: Transformers G1
Characters: Starscream and Skyfire
Rating: G
Words: 440

Just one more night on the planet. One more, and then everything would change - everything. After all, it wasn't every cycle that you went into space. And Starscream simply could not sit still.

He had waited so, so long for this. They both had. They'd worked ridiculously hard; they had lived for this. It was about time they saw a reward for their efforts. Space, at last… The whole universe expected them, theirs for the taking.

… well, technically, they would stay on a very specific route and return as soon as possible. It was their first trip. But it was the principle of the thing. There would come a time when their freedom would be complete, and it didn't seem so far, now. The first step towards that goal was so near that it was hard to believe. He was ready for this. He'd been waiting since forever.

So why did he feel so anxious?

Skyfire was nervous, too. Someone who didn't know him well probably wouldn't have even noticed, but Starscream did, and he wasn't sure if it was comforting to see that he wasn't the only one, or if it only made things worse. It was rare for his friend to be anything other than calm and cheerful. Now he was double-checking things a million times and muttering to himself and fidgeting.

"Maybe we should revise that list-"

"Will you stop that?" Starscream interrupted, with an annoyed huff. "We've gone through all that. Everything's fine."

"You're sure of that."

"Absolutely."

"And that's why you're pacing like that, of course."

"Well, you're not helping!"

Skyfire sighed and tried to smile at him. It wasn't the most confident of gestures, but it was a start, he supposed.

"You're right. I'm overthinking this," he said. He paused for an instant, then added, "We're ready."

"Of course we are," said Starscream, and if his voice didn't sound quite as proud as usual, he did his best to ignore it. "We're going to be great. You'll see."

And hopefully they'd come back in one piece, too. And not get lost or crash or miscalculate their fuel or any of the many, many things that could go wrong.

… but they wouldn't. Not at all. They were smart and well trained and most importantly, they deserved this.

"Perhaps we will," Skyfire chuckled. "Yes, I think we will."

"Wouldn't expect any less," Starscream said. And, in spite of all the nervousness (perfectly justified, if they asked him), he found that he genuinely believed that. They'd got this far, after all, hadn't they?

They could take on the whole universe. There was no doubt.
