The first night of travel, Raphael asked me where I wanted to go.
The question frightened me. I was six; I barely understood the concept of Rouen as city, let alone a world outside its boundaries. I gave Raphael the only answer I could.
“I don't know.” And because the night was cold: “Perhaps someplace warm.”
Raphael placed his hand on my head carefully. In the early days, his touches were hesitant and unsure. At the time I assumed it was due to my unclean appearance; it was not until later that I discovered he was the only child of unloving parents, that he was not used to physical affections.
“A wise idea,” he said gravely. He always treated me seriously. “Marseille...perhaps that would work.” He smiled at me. “At least, it is warmer.”
“You would be safe there? In...Marseille?”
“Safe enough, I suppose.” Raphael frowned. He cupped my face in his hands and forced my gaze to meet his. “It will be a difficult trip. How far can you travel?”
I had never ventured beyond Rouen before that moment. It did not matter.
“As far as you need me to.”
