[Aug 2] [Kingdom Hearts] Marital Bliss

Title: Marital Bliss
Day/Theme: August 2 – over the world and under the world
Series: Kingdom Hearts
Characters/Pairing: Kairi, Sora, Riku, Hercules, minor Hades/Persephone
Rating: G

"The sad thing is," Kairi thinks as she stares through the bars of her cage with her chin in her hands, "this isn't even the worst situation I've ever been in."

It's dank and depressing here, and it's difficult to make herself comfortable, but at least her heart’s still in one piece, and she isn't bored. One thing about gods is that when they get mad, they get loud. She can hear Hades and his queen arguing perfectly well even though they're currently several rooms away.

"You know, is it really too much to ask for a nice, 'Hi, honey, how was your summer?' or something after spending six months with the golden crowd?”

"Yeah, well, nothing says, 'Welcome home, darling,' like stopping to kidnap some girl before you even bother to kiss me hello! Tell me, is this a habit of yours?”

Kairi wonders if being a Princess of Heart means that she comes equipped with an innate attraction to danger. What else could explain how she seemed to be the only one to notice the odd, faintly glowing young woman making her way to a small cairn in the middle of a field outside the Coliseum gates. Letting her curiosity get the better of her and trusting Riku and Sora to keep themselves occupied with signing up for the latest tournament, Kairi had followed after her to see what she was up to.

She hadn’t expected the earth to open up at the woman’s feet, or for Hades to appear and greet the woman fondly. “Hey, Persephone! How’s your mother? Bad news, I hope!” Things promptly went downhill once Hades glanced over and saw Kairi spying on them not fifty feet away. “Hold that thought, babe.”

In the blink of an eye, the lord of the dead towered over Kairi (another thing about gods: they can be incredibly fast when they want to be). “Well, well, well! If it isn’t the Keybrat’s little girlfriend! Isn’t this an unexpected pleasure.” The next thing she knew, Hades had her swept up over one shoulder and was striding back toward the chasm. “Seph, looks like we’ve got company tonight!”

Persephone seemed less than thrilled, to put it lightly. “Hades, what in the name of the Styx do you think you’re doing? Can’t you leave things alone for one day while I get settled back in?”

“C’mon, hurry up before the goody-goods catch wise,” Hades insisted as he shoved Persephone along, sealing the entryway up behind him and cutting off Kairi’s screams and Persephone’s protests.

By the time it occurred to Kairi to do more in her own defense than just squirm and shout ineffectually, Hades had deposited her in a conveniently appearing cage that looked like it had been crafted from rock and bone. “Wait here, sweetcheeks,” he told her. With that out of his way, he turned back toward his fuming wife. “Now, if you’d care to take this somewhere more private?” he asked as he led her toward a door further within the palace.

“Oh yes,” Persephone snarled with all the fire it took to manage being Hades’ wife and staying sane. “Let’s.”

They’ve been bickering nonstop ever since. Persephone seems to be winning the argument, Kairi notices with a sense of wry amusement. Good, maybe that means she'll be out of here before...

There's a ¬¬¬¬¬clank of armor, and Kairi looks up just in time to see Sora, Riku, and Hercules charge into the room with weapons drawn. Hercules must have convinced the Olympians to lend their aid as well, considering the etherial aura that surrounds the special armor they’re all wearing.

“Kairi!” The boys immediately look relieved when they see that she isn’t hurt. “Don’t worry, we’re going to get you out of there,” Sora promises.

Kairi scrambles to her feet and pushes the cage door open (after smacking herself in the forehead for not thinking to use her Keyblade earlier, she had at least remembered to use it on the lock), trying to urge her rescuers back the way they came. “Come on, we’ve got to go before…”

“Wait, you mean you could have just freed yourself this entire time?” Riku asks, caught between confusion and annoyance.

“I could have gotten out of the cage, sure,” Kairi tries to explain, “but I couldn’t have gotten past…” There’s a trifold snarl behind her, and she sighs as Cerberus bounds out of the shadows to attack the intruders. “…him.”

“Well, at least we came prepared,” Sora says sheepishly as Hercules rushes to grapple the beast and the others follow up with Keyblades and magic. They don’t notice when Hades and Persephone, drawn by the commotion, arrive to watch the show, nor do they see Hades attempt to force an encore. Just as well, really, since the idea goes kaput when Persephone gives him that look again.

“Tch, women,” Hades mutters sourly.
