[Aug 1] [Yu-Gi-Oh!] Ride
Title: Ride
Day/Theme: August 1 – healed by wind and sun
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh!
Character: Malik Ishtar
Rating: G
Despite all the years he had spent longing for it, it’s harder to adjust to life in the light than Malik had expected. After a lifetime trapped underground as the heir to the Tombkeepers’ legacy and then lurking in the shadows as the leader of the Ghouls, the few months its been since the end of Battle City simply aren’t enough to banish the darkness still lingering in Malik’s heart just yet.
He has to remember to restrain himself, to not roundly curse any stranger who happens to bump into him in the street, to not lash out at his siblings whenever things go wrong, to not reach for a Rod that is no longer there when his anger reaches its peak (and those times are the worst). He must remember that he is no longer seeking revenge for a lost childhood, but atonement for the crimes he has committed along the way.
Whenever things get to be too much to cope with at once, Malik grabs his helmet, gives some excuse to Rashid and Isis (the gods above know why he even bothers; he knows they’re fully aware of why he’s really going and are giving him enough room to do so), and heads out on his bike, going as fast as it can take him. He thinks only of the road ahead, the wind rustling his clothes, and the sun on his skin. He remembers that moment of discovery and pure joy when he first saw a motorcycle, and how it felt when he felt the roar of the engine and the freedom that came with it for the very first time. It’s moments like these, he tells himself, that make leaving his darkness behind worth it. It’s going to take time before he can really deserve to live out in the sun, and he knows he can’t run away from everything, but for now, this is enough.
And little by little, the shadows start to fade away.
