[Aug 1] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Details
Title: Details
Day/Theme: August 1 - healed by wind and sun
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Characters: Al and Mei
Rating: G
Words: 350
Notes: SPOILERS for the end of the manga
The sun was strong at this time of the year, and here on the open field it felt even stronger. There were very few trees to give them shadow, and they hadn't seen a building in days. All they had was their little tent, where they hid at noon when the heat became too much. Al didn't mind. It wasn't nearly as bad as crossing the desert, and both of them had made it through that. This was just summer.
Besides, he liked being outdoors. He always had; he was a country boy, after all, and he had spent the best days of his childhood running around on the grass and climbing trees. But now... well, now it was even better. He could appreciate it in a way that he would never had imagined, before everything happened.
Every little detail was a treasure. The sun on his skin - his skin, really, did people ever realize how wonderful that was? The wind playing with his hair. The smell of air and earth and green, young plants. Everything, even the heat and the cold... The first time they'd been caught by rain during their travels, he had simply stood there, looking up as the cool droplets slid down his face, and Mei had had to drag him inside the tent before he got drenched. It was the sensible thing to do; they didn't carry a lot of spare clothes. But he would have liked to stay there a bit longer, just feeling.
They didn't talk much about it. There was no need, he thought. She knew. Sometimes she would look at him and smile, or maybe shake her head a little, and he wondered how enthralled he'd looked by whatever new detail he'd just discovered. At other times, she showed him things. She'd come to him with a ladybug on her hand, once, and passed it to him so it would tickle his fingers as it walked. Such a small thing, and yet...
The world was made of details, after all. He had learned, perhaps better than anyone, to enjoy them.
