[May 23] [Tales of Rebirth] White Water
Title: White Water
Day/Theme: May 23, 2010 "My eyes flew open"
Series: Tales of Rebirth
Character/Pairing: Mao, Annie, the rest of the main party
Rating: G
Eugene threw his well-tempered strength against his pole, trying to turn the raft away from the rough patch of rocks that jutted out of the water just ahead of them. Veigue gritted his teeth in anticipation of the impact they would be unable to avoid. "Hold on tight!" he urged, kneeling down so he wouldn't be immediately knocked into the water.
"Kya!" Annie screamed as she was flung loose into the rush of cold water.
"Annie!" Hilda and Mao simultaneously lunged to grab her hand. Hilda's fingers connected with the staff- that had just slipped out of Annie's soaked grasp. Mao managed to connect with Annie's sleeve, but in doing so, he lost his balance and almost immediately followed her into the water.
As frantic as Eugene felt at this turn of events, he knew it would be unwise to allow himself to follow them into the dangerous waters. His strength would be needed to keep the raft and its remaining occupants from veering horribly off course. Only once they had found a safe foothold on land could he break off and attempt to locate and rescue their two young friends.
Hilda stared in open-mouthed shock at the staff in her hand as Annie and Mao disappeared in the churning waters, their voices lost long before their tiny bodies. It had angered her when Mao made the insinuation that she might be carrying any extra weight on her body, but it was that same reasonable weight that would've allowed her to pull Annie back up without falling off the way Mao had.
"What'll we do?!" Tytree worried. If he hadn't been so busy with his own pole, helping Eugene steer the raft away from the rocks, he would've ben flailing his hands in helpless agony.
"I don't think there's anything we can do until we're able to stop." Eugene was as immovable as a mountain in the midst of a hurricane. "The sooner we're through these rapids and can pull the raft up onto a bank, the sooner we can go looking for them."
"Hurry Tytree, hurry," Hilda urged him. He was the only one with the necessary experience to manage this job. Eugene was strong, but Tytree knew the river.
"I know, I know!" His face was cold, but the sweat was running hot down his cheeks. "Go to the right- the next place you can climb onto the bank will be on that side," he ordered. He only hoped he could hold it together enough to manage this rescue operation properly. There were so many things that could happen to them in the water. They were strong kids, but how well could they swim? Already he feared of ever seeing them again.
Wet. Wet, cold, so cold, shivering, wet clothes sticking to her body. Grit in her mouth. Grit, water, a bad taste. The ground beneath her was cold and unpleasant as well. Soaked, slimy grass and rough sand. What was going on? What had just happened? At first she couldn't remember. Oh, the raft. The river. She had fallen off in the rapids.
Annie opened her eyes.
