[May 19] [Original] Naming Victories

Title: Naming Victories
Day/Theme: May 19, 2010 "To murmur name upon name"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Bashir, Saselia, etc.
Rating: G

Bashir walked slowly down the outer steps of the higher court, limping just slightly on his weaker ankle- the one that never seemed to get a long enough chance to properly heal. Simcha and Fado waited, barely feeling the press of any anticipation. It was probably their age at work. They had found themselves in so many tenser situations than this. It was out of their hands. Whatever was going to happen had happened.

Saselia was much younger. She rushed up to meet Bashir. She held up her smile, resisting the pressure to let it cave in as Bashir's face, smiling only in the eyes, greeted her with a mild and weary look. He looked his age now, or beyond his age. "Bashir! How are you? What happened?"

"I'm fine, Saselia. Ofika and Saffron and Urbahn...everyone is fine." The smile crept into his lips, but Saselia was gripped by the unpleasant fear that his expression might be only intended to humor her.

"You're really okay?" she insisted to know, stopping him before he gave another bland and shaky answer to her second inquiry. "I was really concerned not to be able to see you. I didn't feel very useful out here."

"No, you shouldn't feel bad," he reached out to touch her arm, settling his hand on her shoulder. "You did everything you could. And just knowing you were out here thinking of me- all three of you- I was able to stand my ground and hold myself together just a little longer."

"So everything resolved itself for the best," Fado concluded.

"The best you could ask for under the circumstances," Bashir settled for, shrugging. "The case against the high priest is closed. Hask Na Ayath is beyond suspicion. Urbahn and Saffron were both confirmed in their official court appointments- I think my uncle, umm, Emperor Tiokihawa, already adores both of them."

"And Ofika?"

"Uh, I'm sure she'll slip out of her father's hands and be out here to say something, goodbye at least, to you in a minute."

"Presumably there's nothing to say about Ilekano," Fado asked in his own roundabout manner.
"Not much you didn't know going into this affair, Fado."

Simcha chuckled and poked his friend in the ribs. Fado took all of this in stride.

"Of course, he did say something worth remembering." Now that he'd brought it up, Bashir was going to have to say it, but it was still kind of embarrassing. Saselia looked over at him expectantly. "Well, I figure you know that nothing has changed for Teleri or me."

"Yeah, yeah, get on with it and tell us what your stepdad said, Bashir!" Saselia hassled him. The feeling of excitement in her heart was building, because Bashir looked perfectly sincere again now.

"He told me, 'You're a good son.'"
