[May 18] [Original] Overhead

Title: Overhead
Day/Theme: May 18, 2010 "In the night sky"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Bashir, Saselia, Saffron
Rating: G

"Look! Look up! Bashir!" Saselia yanked Bashir's sleeve, pulling him around away from his meal to look up into the sky. The night was darker than he had realized. What could be obscuring the stars like that? They were darker than clouds and faster moving. He dropped his spoon to rub his eyes.

"Are those...bats?" That would explain the shrill noises he had been hearing for some time now. He just didn't really know what bats sounded like.

"I can't believe how many there are!" The bats clearly had no interest in the people below on the road and around the way station, but they still made Saffron uncomfortable. She fought the urge to crouch down and cover her head with her arms- she would only be making a fool of herself in front of her new companions and she was sick of looking weak. Honestly, she really could take care of herself in normal circumstances! She didn't usually need any rescuing at all!

It wasn't long before the bats were off, flitting away across the fields in search of something to eat. "They eat bugs," Bashir thought. "This isn't the right area for fruit bats." Of course, he wasn't completely sure of either of these things.

"I wish Uncle Simcha could've seen that."

Bashir picked his spoon back up and returning his focus to his half-eaten meal. "I'm sure he's seen it before. ...Or is a big flock of bats like that really unusual out here? ...Is "flock" the right word to use about bats?"

"Who wants to look at bats?" Saffron huffed, holding a finger up toward the sky to trace the patterns of the stars. "I like seeing stars much better."
