[May 13] [Original] Inside, the War Lives

Title: Inside, the War Lives
Day/Theme: May 13, 2010 "All I have are stories, night thoughts"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Israel, Katrine, Alejandro
Rating: PG

"Does Alejandro talk much about the war? Does he tell your son?" Israel asked the barber's wife, watching her as she tidied up the shop. Alejandro did try to sweep up the hair on his own, but he never could do it quite as well as Katrine could. She was very precise.

"...Don't you think he's still a little young to be learning about that?" If Katrine had her way, her son would never hear about his father's role in the Silesian Civil War. It was a time she herself would like to forget, and Alejandro's part in particular was full of controversy. They all wanted to forget what Alejandro had been called. There was no place in Silesia for a man they called a war criminal. The way Katrine told it, Alejandro was innocent. The way Alejandro told it, they were all war criminals- each and every one of the commanding officers, and Emperor Ilekano most of all.

Alejandro was not part of Sylacie's Silesian ex-patriot community, so he clearly was viewed with some animosity there, but Israel did see the logic in their distaste for him. Whether he had done it in some terrible way or not, Alejandro had helped force their home states of Shirikh and Jeremgaln back into the empire.

"I guess you're right...It's just that Alejandro acts like the war is all he has. Old grudges, his magic, his fighting skills, weird stories about his colleagues... It's hard to believe that he could keep them a secret from anyone."

"He's a blabbermouth, you mean?" For a second Israel felt he had crossed the line, but then he saw the twinkle in Katrine's eyes. He let out the breath he had automatically been holding. "No, of course I understand, Israel. Nothing's defined Alejanka's life like the wars. ...He tells me at times that if he hadn't met me that the war would be all he had."

"He thinks about it a lot, huh?"

"All the time. I think he always will."
