He is an idiot. Edward should know better than to return with a broken arm or a bent leg, should know better than to let days turn into weeks pass into months without a single call or letter. Not a word comes from him until the day he arrives in town, Al in tow, and suddenly Winry looks out to find he's alive. Not dead, not wounded, not suffering unconcious on the side of the road.

Alive.

He always comes back only when he needs something, she realizes one day. Only when something needs to be repaired, something needs to be remembered, but never the important things. Only his legs and arms, never his heart or soul. She can never go beyond skin deep with either boy anymore.

That hurts, because while they go off on some adventure, carrying their wounds on them like badges of honour, she can't do anything to lessen their weight. She can't help with the burden at all and is instead treated like another one.

So she tries to remind him she's still here, if he ever needs to share. Ever wants to share, because he probably needs to but doesn't want to.

"Win--"

"EDWARD ELRIC!" Winry dashes out the door, tossing her wrench. "DID YOU JUST BREAK YOUR ARM AGAIN?"

Al stares at his brother's prone figure, sighing.  "Hi, Winry."

-x-

"Winry," She looks up from where she's fixing his arm, her screwdriver carefully balanced between two fingers. "Uh..."

Ed looks away, shifting his body slightly. He seems...uncomfortable.

"What?" She goes back to her tinkering, carefully paying attention as she loosens the bolts in his arm.

"Well...do you..." Al is sitting on the bed behind her, making small noises of encouragment. "...in return for all this...do you want to go....shopping?"

"..." Winry stops, the screwdriver almost slipping out of her fingers. What did he--"Huh?"

"I asked if you have something you want to buy!" Ed almost snaps, nervous.

"..." A payment, she supposes, but not the usual kind. She has to force him to come if she wants to go somewhere together.

Ed, asking on his own....

She shakes herself out of her stupor long enough to give him a quick smile. "Sure! There's a new metal out, lighter and stronger than the one I'm using now, and I've been dying to--"

"...right. Metals and stuff...." Ed starts to tune her out, muttering under his breath something along the lines of "dresses like a normal" and "makeup, for one".

She pretends to not hear it, because she isn't interested in those things in the first place.

Whistling as she continues his tune up, she gives a light chuckle.

Ed is an idiot, in all the ways that matter.
