[May 12] [Original] Those Are Both Things We Don't Need

Title: Those Are Both Things We Don't Need
Day/Theme: May 12, 2010 "The queens and the court jesters"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Ilekano & Tiokihawa
Rating: G

"Apparently, court jesters are back in vogue," Tiokihawa told his older brother. He had only recently returned from a trip to the Catalonian court at Regallan (supposedly as a diplomat, but actually just as part of a bargain between Ilekano and Catalonia's Solio Durango to swap annoying relatives for a while so they could get some peace) and he was caught up full-swing in a love of all things Catalonian.

Ilekano knew one of Tio's not-so-subtle hints when he heard it, but that didn't mean he was in any way interested in playing along. "Well, queens are in vogue too-I'm sure you know all about the king and his lovers, but you don't have one of those either, Tio," he answered, drumming his fingers along the armrest of his throne. His fingertips were familiar with all of the smallest cracks and dings in the indigo paint and the aged wood underneath it.

Tiokihawa frowned. It was a childish expression, exaggerated to force his brother to see his hurt. "You know I don't like to talk about that. ...You know I don't want anyone else after Shiral."

The older emperor did not roll his eyes, but he was sorely tempted. "Yes, of course."

"In that respect, I suppose you and Sol are quite alike-"

"Sol?" Now that was something different. Was it common in Catalonia's upper echelons to refer to the king so familiarly? "When did you and Solio become so close?"

"Close? Uh, well, we're not exactly close, Kano. Not close at all. We barely talked the whole time I was there. But, you see he put me right into the dedicated hands of his court jester, Thesario, and a lovely young lady, Marua, and they took me all over the capital and it was just beautiful. And both of them call him 'Sol.'"

Ilekano was willing to admit that he might have been just a bit wrong about the wild tastes of Solio Durango. There might be some good use to keeping your capital full of joking jesters and lovely queen-for-a-nights. But if Ilekano were to have any of his own, they would not call him "Kano."
