While the Moon Watches
Akiko sets out the vase of susuki next to the display of rice cakes. She smiles at her husband as he comes into the room.
“Is that child still here?” he asks politely. Both of them try to ignore the loud voices coming from the other room. “Perhaps I should…”
He goes out. It becomes quiet.
She should ask Shindou-san to stay for o-tsukimi. Instead, Akiko finds her husband standing at the door’s threshold, watching, listening.
He knows, she decides, reading his unguarded face.
Apprehension. Fear. Concern. Finally, acceptance.
She slips her hand into his.
“They are warriors,” he says.

Author’s notes:
O-tsukimi is a party or gathering held in a scenic spot to view the autumn moon, a practice dating back to Heian times. Traditionally, offerings of dumplings and rice cakes are displayed as well as arrangements of Japanese pampas grass (susuki) and taro root.
