[May 11] [Ace Attorney Investigations] Self-Made Sinner (Part 2)
Title: Self-Made Sinner (Part 2)
Day/Theme: May 11, 2010 "I could be all that you want and more"
Series: Ace Attorney Investigations
Character/Pairing: Calisto Yew, Quercus Alba
Rating: PG
Author's comment: While not continuing precisely from part 1, the same ideas are explored further here.
People who met Calisto had all kinds of ideas about her ethnic background. Her last name was Italian, like her father, but her mother was half Puerto Rican and the other half was a whole mix of things. Calisto liked it. She could be whoever she wanted to be. She could be anyone. It would've been nice to have a more generic last name to obscure things with though.
It was cheapest to attend community college. Calisto worked part-time and attended school part-time, studying a little bit of everything. What was most interesting, she wondered, sighing, droopy-eyed through boring classes. What would bring her the most money?
She worked in sales, but just because she was bringing in money through conventional means didn't mean she forgot the lessons of her youth. The right kind of sugar daddy could do you right. It especially helped if he was someone who'd buy her textbooks along with dinner.
Calisto did her best to try and keep her eyes open for any and all possibilities around her, but it was completely by accident that she first met Quercus Alba. She had been in the city, bargain hunting on a Saturday. Without any bodyguards and in plain clothes, who would have known he was the Cohdopian ambassador. He was just an old man, all knots and sap, beard and wrinkles. The joint was a hole in the wall. They shared similar tastes in Mexican food. Calisto watched him over her chips and salsa. Eating alone there was nothing better to do. And after his margarita arrived, Quercus Alba noticed her too.
"I've never seen you before."
"I haven't either. But I usually come at lunch." Although there was no way for her to see beyond it, Calisto recognized a man hiding behind a facade when she saw one. They exchanged words cautiously and slowly. It was like fencing. Each phrase had a point.
The first victory went to Calisto. Ambassador Alba showed his hand first. "I need someone who can be anything."
The ultimate victory was decidedly shared. "For the right amount of cash, I'll be anything you want me to be."
Alba's funds enhanced her education. The more experiences Calisto gathered, the wider range of personas she could realistically create. Privately she acted. Publicly she studied law. Bit by bit Alba initiated her into the smuggling ring. If all went as expected, Calisto would turn out to be an unassailable trump card, successfully played at any time.
Cece Yew didn't have a sister. Alba saw his chance, as she didn't have any other family to pop up and spoil the surprise either. With no one to complain, no one would suspect Calisto. She looked a photo of Cece and tried to imagine what it would be like to be her or similar to her. She got out her makeup kit and gave herself freckles. She bought a pair of earrings shaped like scales (she was a Scorpio, not a Libra) and passed the BAR exam as "Calisto Yew." Calisto had done all the studying, but Alba had provided the necessary funds and paperwork.
She would act as she saw fit. She would outdo herself soon- when she became the Yatagarasu.
