[May 9] [Original] To Defend Her Scholarly Vocation

Title: To Defend Her Scholarly Vocation
Day/Theme: May 9, 2010 "The friend and the foe"
Series: original
Character/Pairing: Saffron, Urbahn, and Saselia
Rating: G

"Hello, Urbahn." Somehow Saffron couldn't help but feel self-conscious as she slide over to sit beside the scholar. He made her feel squirmy, but it wasn't entirely in a bad way. It wasn't the same way Saselia made her twitch and giggle- Saselia sort of shook her up on purpose, at least that was how Saffron saw it. Urbahn did it just by being. And for that, he was the worst of foes to her dedication to her vocation as a serious scholar.

"Saffron." He nodded. His glasses slide down and back up his nose with the bob of his head. Saffron regarded this scriptural scholar very intently. As far as she could determine, Urbahn was in no way aware of the way he managed to turn her insides to jelly and to direct all her energy away from her brain to her heart as soon as he stepped into the room. What was the reason for this?

Sitting alone together and not talking didn't bother Urbahn the way it unsettled Bashir, so this presented Saffron with a good opportunity to linger beside her would-be friend and inadvertent foe without letting on that she was sizing him up. He had good posture, but adopted a rather unassuming pose. His book was closed up at the moment. She assumed he had been reading. He had probably been studying his magic, since he appeared to have hit upon some way to invoke passages of the text of the covenant to create a variety of stunning effects.

It was true that he was quite gifted... Intelligence was something she respected, particularly when paired with modesty and diligence in applying oneself to one's studies. And Urbahn had chosen to do exactly that. He was one of those monks who had dedicated themselves specifically to learning, writing, and teaching. Saffron had to admit, it was a pretty admirable way of living. Certainly she had an interest in continuing to study and grow throughout her life, but to formally pledge oneself to that path, forsaking all but the will of the One, was quite a commitment... "Maybe I admire commitment," she mused.

Actually, Urbahn was also kind of cute. That was not good. That was not helping any. Saffron rubbed her brow. She was thinking herself into a corner. Monks! Honestly!

"I brought you something, Saffie!" Saselia trilled, skipping along the side of the way station with a basket under her arm.

"Oh, Saselia," Saffron sighed, happy to freed from her the grasp of her own worst enemy- the tightly coiled tracks of her wandering mind.
