There was going to be no kidding myself at this point. I continued on along the road that traced the path of the Sulat, but I kept looking back. Best as I could tell, there was only one more town standing between me and Sukaki. It was a border I could cross without even being fully aware of it. It meant it was yet another signpost in my life I couldn't see until I had long crossed it. I'd been into Sukaki plenty of times before, but this time would be it. When I left Catalonia, I wouldn't be able to come back. Even as things stood, I wasn't supposed to be in my home country anymore. If anyone saw me- if anyone recognized me, I mean, I'd be hauled back to the capital in chains.

Of course I was still kidding myself. I was an expert in the art of self-delusion. Not what you'd expect from a military strategist. Not what you'd want from one either, but still-

I couldn't pass up that last town. Even if it meant disaster. Even if it meant being recognized (I was pretty close to Sukaki- if I had tried to flee, I could probably have made it. But since the border's so hard to determine, I suppose there was a chance that I could've been chased a bit too far). Like the fool I was, in I went.

The last town in Catalonia, before you've walked too far and found yourself standing in Sukaki is called "Hamman." The biggest building there is the smithy, which doesn't come as much surprise with a name like Hamman painted on the sign. The hammering echoed throughout the town, but I walked on past the smithy. There was nothing I needed there, and nothing I could use anyway.

I was brave enough to come into town, but timid enough to pass through without talking to anyone. There were girls sitting on the fence. I couldn't help but stop to observe them before I passed. They were pretty, all dressed up for some event. When they returned my gaze I weakened, yet again, inevitably. I waved and hurried away. They looked nervous. Was it because I was a stranger or because I was me? I wasn't man enough to stick around and find out.

Hamman. A nice enough town, but the city is more suited to me.
