[May 4] [Avatar: The Last Airbender] Katara's Journey

Title: Katara's Journey
Day/Theme: May 4/Down an ocean road
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Katara, Katara/Aang
Rating: PG
Word Count: 328
Warnings: Character death, glurge. I also took some liberties with the concept of the reincarnation of the Avatar, but they do seem to fit in with the way the show handles it.

This is a road that Katara must travel alone. She rides in a small boat, bending water behind her instead of rowing. It's been a long time since she last travelled. She searches the horizon for land but sees none.

Katara thinks of Aang, whom she has left behind, but there's no changing that. He will understand.

The sun is bright but not painful to her. In the water are shining fish. She trails her hands in the ocean and they jump their way through her fingers. It's beautiful here, more beautiful than anything she has seen in her other travels, and the water is so fresh and pure.

Katara spots land, and creates a huge wave to lead her toward it. She has left her children behind as well, and her grandchildren, airbenders all. They will miss her, but someday they will be together again.

Finally she lands on a beach, and exits the boat, making her way on foot to a place of green grass and colorful, fragrant fruit trees.

Then she hears a voice, and turns to see a long line of people bowing in her direction. At first she does not understand who they are, but then the reality hits her. Avatar Roku, fitting Aang's description, is at the head of the line.

"We are all Avatars," he intones. "And so we are all Aang. We will keep you company until your Avatar arrives."

It should feel strange, but Katara feels nothing but joy. But one thing does bother her, when she looks down at herself.

"I am still old," she states to Roku, holding out her wrinkled and age-spotted hands. "I thought I would be young again here."

Avatar Roku shakes his head. "You can be, if you insist upon it," he says. "But I think your Aang, when he comes, will want to see you just as he saw you last."

Katara smiles, because that is the most fitting answer of all.
